Inasmuch 2010 Project Description List “Come
Touch a Life"
Please
read through the project list below and find some opportunities
you will commit yourself to in order to make a difference
in someone’s life on Saturday, April 24. OIAM
begins @ 8:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall.
Make this community outreach a priority and “Come
Touch a Life.”
- Visitation/Communion
to Home Bound – Sybil Edwards
A team of volunteers visit with elderly or home bound
persons. While there team members will fellowship
with the home owner as well as look for additional
opportunities to serve- such as taking out their trash,
changing light bulbs, checking smoke detectors, etc.
Team members will also facilitate a worship experience
for those who physically cannot attend corporate worship
services, through prayer, devotionals and communion.
Communion can be done in many creative ways. The team
can create their own unique worship experience based
on the gifts of the team as well as the person with
whom they are visiting.
- Baby
Shower for Teen Moms- Susan Culbreth
Organize and host a shower for young mothers. Offer
encouragement and God’s message of guidance, hope
and love. Also provide information such as health,
nutrition, child care resources, etc. that would be
helpful for young mothers to know. Other community
resources will be a part to provide a well rounded
prenatal care experience is helpful for young mothers.
Volunteers 18 and older may participate.
- Bud
Vases Arrangements for Nursing Homes- Hilda Whitley
Collect vases and artificial flowers, then create
arrangements to be taken to local assisted living
and nursing homes. This project will need to be done
the week leading up to OIAM and coordinated with various
local nursing/independent living facilities in the
area.
- Bud
Vase Delivery to Nursing Homes- Bryan Harris
Our elderly need and deserve our time and our affection.
Volunteers will visit residents of various local facilities
(coordinated with the Bud Vase Arrangement Project)
to deliver the flower arrangements and spend a little
time to “visit” with them.
- Childcare
for Volunteers- Bryan Harris
Provide safe, fun and positive care for the children
of volunteers ministering in other projects. Church
resources will be available for use including rooms,
toys, TV/Video, etc. Childcare will need to begin
at 7:30 a.m. and last until the last child has been
picked up. Parent/Child information cards will need
to be filled out and kept on hand for safety purposes.

Cookies to…- Faye & Pope Hardee
Bake and package home made goodies for area workers.
Some of these groups can be done the week of OIAM
as some of these groups may not be open on Saturdays.
Many cookies are needed. They can be wrapped and prepared
however the coordinator deems appropriate. Cards of
thanks and appreciation can accompany the goodies.

Harbor House- Steve Woodard
Partner with staff to renovate the backyard to create
a fun and welcoming outdoor space for residents, their
children and the staff to enjoy.
- Health
Kits- Leah Thorndyke
Collect and package health kits to be administered
to homeless or needy persons through various ministry
connections; soup kitchen, clothes closet, disaster
relief, handy man, etc. We also will supply local
agencies with bags as well; Sheriff’s Dept, Police,
Fire, etc. A list of items to be put in the kits will
be provided.
- Breakfast
for volunteers- Gayle Bizzell
Provide an energizing breakfast OIAM volunteers. Breakfast
volunteers should plan to start early to allow time
for coffee to brew etc. Clean up is also included
for the lunch crew.

Lunch for volunteers- Trip and Nancy Barry
Provide lunch meals for those serving in OIAM. Team
should develop a plan for preparing, serving and delivering
(if needed) lunch. Clean up is also included for the
lunch crew.
- Snacks
to Nursing/Rest Home Caregivers- Bryan Harris
Provide a bundle of refreshment for nurses/care givers
at our local facilities. Calls will need to be made
to confirm the number to prepare for as well as coordinate
schedules. This project can be done the week leading
up to OIAM.
- Rest
Stop Ministry- Billy Wiggs
We freely give because Christ freely gave. Travelers
on north and south bound I-95 can get a free cup of
coffee and a smile. One team per rest stop. This project
will start earlier than most. Only college students
and older may participate in this outreach. Large
coffee pots, coffee and condiments, tables, extension
cords need to be obtained ahead of time. Bryan Harris
will obtain permission from the NC DOT for teams to
serve at these rest stops.
- Yard
Work- Danny Hensley
There will be multiple opportunities to work in yards
all around Smithfield. The coordinator will scout
the yards ahead of time in order to prioritize need,
equipment needed and the amount of time necessary.

Handy Man Projects- All skills are needed. Each project
will have its own coordinator and team. Projects will
range from wheelchair ramps to small home repair.
Protective clothing is necessary. Adults need to accompany
children younger than 9th grade if they wish to participate.

- Home
Delivered Meals- Anesha Johnson
We partner with the Council on Aging to provide a
hot, nutritious meal for those who need it but are
unable to get out on their own. We will need cooks
and route drivers to deliver these meals.
- Clothes
Closet- Jo Ann Wiggs
Sorting, moving, cleaning and arranging are constant
duties that keep our clothes closet up and running.
Please be a part of helping this ministry stay service
ready.
- Documentary-
Mike Ward
The story of what God will do when His people humble
themselves and serve Him needs to be shared and celebrated.
Volunteers are needed to record and share this powerful
message of ministry and community. Volunteers will
travel to multiple project sites to video and take
pictures of FBC ministers in motion. Volunteers can
also assist in the editing and production of the OIAM
documentary. The documentary will be used in multiple
settings throughout the year.
- Community
Garden- Michelle Ball
Volunteers will clean up and out the planters originally
built by Boy Scouts in order to plant and grow vegetables
for the surrounding community. There may be other
opportunities such as building additional planters,
watering, etc.
- Laundromat
Outreach- Carolyn Tharrington
We want to extend the hand of help and fellowship
as we provide a small financial gift to help those
with the expense of washing and drying clothes. We
will also provide bottled water and juice boxes for
children for those who would like some. Information
about FBC Smithfield and our Hispanic Mission will
be shared as well.
- Flea
Market Ministry- Judy Williams
Have an outreach presence at a flea market located
on Hwy. 301 in Smithfield. There can be multiple opportunities
through live music, Bible stories, children’s games,
drama groups, handing out free coffee/cookies/etc.
- Behavioral
Health Unit/Cancer Center Projects- Mary Ann Bradshaw
Help organize, clean and prepare facilities and resources
for those being served through the BHU and the Cancer
Center at Johnston Health Hospital. Project coordinator
will need to establish contacts with these facilities
to coordinate details and schedules.
