History
The Clothes
Closet is a mission service at First Baptist for people
who are unable to get clothes due to poverty, fires,
unemployment, etc. The closet was started in 1990. Edna
Earle Sanders and Polly Johnson served as co-chairpersons.
When Polly moved to Raleigh, Ruby Matthews took her
place. The closet was located on the third floor where
the heating and cooling systems were. When the last
heating-cooling system was installed, the closet moved
to the old Young People’s Department on the third floor. Clothes for the
closet are given by church members and people in
our county. Presently, there are 775/785 people who come to
the closet to get clothes every three months.
Operation
ID cards are used for identification (drivers
license etc.) The Clothes Closet is opened on Monday
and Thursday from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. If a person
or family needs clothes on days when the closet is not
opened, the church office can be contacted and someone
from the closet will come to help them.
Jo Ann Wiggs and Faye
Hardee are in charge of the Clothes Closet. There are twelve (12) volunteers who work in
the closet. Many volunteers are needed to run a large mission
program such as this. If you are interested in helping,
call the church office for more information.
