So Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him

BACK PACK PROGRAM AT FBC SMITHFIELD

The Back Pack Program is…..
The Back Pack Program is a service provided by the ministry of First Baptist Church in conjunction with the North Carolina Food Bank to help proved nutritious meals to high risk children in Johnston County. At the present time, we are sending 52 backpacks to Selma Elementary and 50 backpacks to South Smithfield Elementary filled with pop-top can food, juice boxes, a breakfast bar, and a fruit cup or apple sauce. The children selected by the school social workers are all a part of the free lunch program (Selma is at 80%, South Smithfield is at almost 70%). More could be added to the total. However, our grant with the North Carolina Food Bank is limited. West Johnson is another school with a high volume of high risk children. It is my vision that we could branch out and collect the food items needed to expand the Back Pack Program to include more children.

Items we need…..
The Food Bank is now out of the items it gives to the programs in Johnston and Wake County. Although they are providing a high volume of donated items from the State Fair until January, we need supplemental items to put into the packs. If you are shopping for groceries and would like to purchase items needed for this program they would be greatly appreciated. Some items needed are…..

  • Pop-top can spaghetti, franks n’ beans, ravioli etc….
  • Breakfast Bars
  • Pudding
  • Individual Cereals
  • Raisins
  • Juice Boxes

Help Needed!
As of now, we have volunteers to pack the backpacks on a monthly basis. We also have some volunteers to help take the packs to the schools, however, more help would be appreciated.

Here are some ways you could help with this ministry:
Set up for the Back Packers. This would require lifting cases of food and organizing the food for the assembly line of packers to pack the bags. Takes about one hour a week.

Pick up Back Packs at the schools on Wednesday and stack unzipped bags in the backpack room. Takes about one hour for each school.

Clean Backpacks – Once a month on a Wednesday afternoon check packs and clean the packs that need it. Takes about one hour.

Take Packs to School – Help move the bags from the Back Pack Room to the church van, then to the schools. Takes about one hour.

Thank you for all your prayers and support for this very important ministry that meets some of the immediate needs of children in Smithfield and Selma. Tommy Cook, coordinator

HISTORY TIDBIT
On May 16, 1945, Charles Gillispie suffered the first of a series of cerebral hemorrhages and died two days later on May 18, 1945. His ten year pastorate had been a time of growth of the church’s influence in the community and the spiritual growth of the membership, which doubled during that time. The budget increased from $3,000 to $22,000.

SYMPATHY
We express our Christian sympathy to Dot Pounds in the recent homegoing of her sister.

THANK YOU
The outpouring of love shown to our family through prayers, kind words and deeds, and Christian support these past two years is so appreciated. During those several days of celebrating mother’s homegoing you overwhelmed us with your cards, visits, phone calls and meals. We are grateful for your expressions of care and concern. To be a part of the family of First Baptist Church is truly a blessing. Faye, Pope, and Thad Hardee, Debbie and Michael Anderson

How loving and encouraging you have been to us, witnessing to us in various ways during the homegoing of Bob’s father and Judy’s two surgeries. We testify God is forever faithful in seasons of joy, pain and sorrow. He is our contentment. Isn’t grace truly amazing? Thanks be to God for all of you at First Baptist – our Kingdom family. Bob and Judy Dixon

Your kindness and caring mean so much to us and your thoughtfulness during this time of loss is greatly appreciated. Please continue to remember our family in your thoughts and prayers. Clark & Tami Johnson
